Kumdo Gear

There are a few basic gears you need in order to excercise Kumdo.

Dobok
Dobok (or Kendo-Gi in Japanese) is a Kumdo uniform.

A dobok comes in 2 pieces - top and trousers.
Most common color is dark-blue as shown the picture, but white dobok is also widely used.

Korean Kumdo National Team uses a very unique dobok that is white color with black stripes on either side of trousers.

Cost of a typical dobok ranges from around $100 to $300 depending on the material used.
It is a good idea to use a low priced dobok as a begineer and learn about how to look after it (e.g. washing, folding and storing). And as you become more experienced use high-end dobok. 'Number 10000' dobok is most widely loved by Kumdo practitioners for its quality and look.

Jukdo
Jukdo (or Shinai in Japanese) is a sword made of bamboo.

This is most widely used to practice Kumdo or in a competition.

A typical jukdo is made of 4 pieces of bamboo trunk.
Jukdos are expendables. As you train it will crack or break. Depending on the amount and level of train, a typical life span of a jukdo is between 6 months to a few years.

Carbon fibre jukdo is also available that lasts much longer than bamboo jukdo.

A jukdo cost around $60 upwards depending on the quality (material, balance etc) and carbon fibre jukdo costs around $300

Hogu
Hogu (or Bogu in Japanese) is an armour suit. It includes Ho-Myun(mask), Gaap(uppe body armour), Gaap-Sang(lower body armour) and Ho-Wan(hand & wrist protector).

You will wear your hogo when your basic training is completed. Typically it takes around 2 to 6 months before you are prepared to wear hogu.

The quality of hogo ranges from an extreme to an extreme. There are machine made ones at low price and there are hand made ones that can cost up to a typical man's annual salary (or more).
Low cost hogu starts from around $800 and hand made ones are usually $1500 upwards.
Also the life span of a hogu starts from a few years to a few decades.

Mokgum
Mokgum is a sword carved out of wood.

It is also used in kumdo as a part of training.
However a mokgum is not used in hitting or in competitions.
A mokgum is a solid wood and it will be deadly if hit with a mokgum by a Kumdo practitioner

A mokgum is used in training 'Bon' (or Kata in Japanese).
'Bon' is not an easy subject to explain to non Kumdo practitioner, but easly put, 'Bon' is a 'posture' side of Kumdo exercise.

Because it is not used in hitting, the life span of a mokgum is almost indefinite.

A typical mokgum cost around $60 to $100.
